Does Gmail have a format painter?

No, not built in.

Format Painter for Gmail is a Chrome extension that adds one: copy the formatting of any text and apply it to other text in one click.

Free: the full format painter, 10 applies a month.

How to use Format Painter for Gmail

  1. Install

Add it from the Chrome Web Store. Takes ten seconds.

  2. Select styled text

In a compose window, highlight text that already looks right.

  3. Click the paintbrush

It's in Gmail's compose toolbar; clicking it copies the formatting.

  4. Select the target text

It instantly matches the source. Done.

Four ways to trigger it

Same painter, your choice of trigger. The free plan includes all four entry points.

Toolbar paintbrush

One click, right in Gmail's compose toolbar.

Right-click menu

Copy Format / Apply Format on any selection.

Keyboard shortcuts

Copy and apply without leaving the keyboard. Rebindable; ⌥C / ⌥V on Mac.

Popup buttons

Copy and apply straight from the extension icon, no toolbar needed.

What it paints

What it copies

  • Font family and size
  • Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough
  • Text color and highlight color
  • Lists & alignment (optional, off by default)

It removes formatting too: if the source isn't underlined, the target won't be either.

You choose what carries

A settings cog in the popup lets you pick exactly what a paint carries.
